Adobe ActionScript 3 – Functions
An Function within Flash CS3 allow you to create a set of instructions and only have to write them one single time. Eveytime you want to use the instructions you simply call the function that has been created. In this short tutorial, author Bill Dallas Lewis presents the concept of Functions within ActionScript 3 and Flash CS3 as well as how to properly call them from within your presentation. This tutorial is taken from a full length training DVD presented by My Digital Works entitled Adobe Flash CS3 – ActionScript 3. The full course is available from www.mydigitalworks.com as well as from Amazon.com

I once sat with a tutor doing some work on my own and he was explaining something and he didn’t notice I had earphones on listening to turbonegro (I have ADD), i feel a tap on my shoulder and I take off my headphones, turn to him and say “huh? I’m sorry, were you saying something?”. So he had to RE EX-PLA-IN everything again but in the SAME tone of VOICE as THIS guy. I may have A.D.D. but he was an A.S.S. EM-phasize.

FUNCTION TYPES
January 23rd, 2011 at 5:57 pm
AS1 and AS2 were created by Macromediea, where as as3 was made by adobe, so therefor the answer is no.

I’m learning AS 3.0.
But can anyone tell me if i need to also know AS 2.0 if i hope to get a flash design job in near future. It just seems a real drag learning both and i’m gonna bust a neuron doing both
January 23rd, 2011 at 7:47 pm
That’s not true. If you create an AS2 document all works perfectly normal.
And as for what concerns to functions, it works exaclly the same way for AS2 as for AS3.
January 23rd, 2011 at 8:11 pm
I think I will need to learn actionscript 3.0,
actionscript 2.0 doesn’t work 100% in Flash CS4
January 23rd, 2011 at 8:36 pm
i think action script 2 is much easier than this the only difference between this and action script 2 is i think you will be able to make AI in games much less glitchy such as not getting the enemy stuck behind a wall.

how can i fade the preloader out then fade in the content? PLZ HELP!
January 24th, 2011 at 5:10 am
Thank you for the great tutorial! It all seems so easy when you explain it!
I have one problem however. When I press Cmd-Return, my loader begins to work, but I don’t get to see any visual stuff. No green progress bar (just a static green bar), no bytes and no percentage. Any of you who also have this problem? Am I doing something wrong?
Working with Flash CS5. Anti-Alias set to ‘use device fonts’, dynamic text fields, etc…
January 24th, 2011 at 6:06 am
Hey first of all thanks a lot for the tutorials!
I have a problem! When I’m going to execute the movie it gives a message like this and doesn’t show my preloader! I’m using flash CS5
It says – Your content will not stream. Runtime shared Library(RSL) preloading will require all of your content to download before the first frame will play.
How to overcome this problem?
January 24th, 2011 at 6:39 am
Thanks to this, my assignment won’t suck so much. (Y)
January 24th, 2011 at 7:38 am
Thanks for this. By following exactly I was able to make a perfect preloader.
January 24th, 2011 at 8:17 am
Could you make a tutorial on one where when its finished preloading, it shows up with a play button?
January 24th, 2011 at 8:52 am
great video! i’ve had a few problems:
1) the animation in the test and such works fine, but when I click on “stimulate download”, the screen goes blank.
2) i can’t get the percent or any of the other texts to show up in the dynamic text field

@craigandrewmann1985 10x man
January 24th, 2011 at 10:00 am
@redsnow123456 yeah I had the same problem when I first built it. The video poster was using CS3 and so had the “Anti-Alias” option in the text properties (left hand side on my CS5) set to “Anti-Alias for Animation”. If you don’t change this option to “Use Device Fonts” on all your text boxes inside the preloader, when you test the preloader you’re going to see none of the dynamic text and generate an error. Text Properties -> Character (drop down) -> Anti-Alias -> Use Device Fonts.
January 24th, 2011 at 10:53 am
@craigandrewmann1985 10x but Use Device Fonts didn’t find it in cs5 are you sure ?
January 24th, 2011 at 11:27 am
@redsnow123456 an undefined property is something that you haven’t given an instance name. Tutvid named the “bytesTotal” instance like this totalBytes_txt and this should be written in the properties panel of the text box you made inside the loader. Make sure the preferences on CS5 are set to Classic Text and Dynamic Text. If you follow the video word for word it does work also there is a box lower down in this properties window which needs to be set to “Use Device Fonts” to avoid a known issue
January 24th, 2011 at 11:55 am
@zehuangcozbb I don’t know if you got a reply from Nathaniel (Tutvid) but the solution for this problem on CS5 is. Go into the preloader, select each text area one by one and make sure that “anti-alias” is set to Use Device Fonts. Should solve your problem
. I hope!
