A CGI program is any program designed to accept and return data that conforms to the CGI specification. CGI programs are written in a variety of programming languages such as, C, Perl, Java or Visual Basic. The most common language for CGI programming is PERL.

Great danger to security is posed by “server-side includes” (SSI). These are code statements in HTML documents, often written with PHP, that give instructions to the Web server. Some of these instructions can tell the Web server to execute system commands and CGI scripts.
